What Does a Dental Crown Do?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped shell of porcelain that covers the visible portion of a tooth. Because it creates a new surface, the crown absorbs chewing forces, protecting the tooth and providing an extra layer of protection. With your new restoration, your smile will look seamless and natural, and you can use the tooth to chew comfortably again.

Some reasons our dentist might recommend a dental crown are:

  • Strengthen a tooth with a large cavity
  • Support a worn, cracked, or broken tooth
  • Restore a tooth with multiple fillings
  • Strengthen a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Support dental bridgework
  • Restore a dental implant's function and appearance
  • Improve a tooth's shape, size, or appearance

If you have a damaged tooth and think it might need a dental crown, please call Russell Dental at (702) 798-6216 and schedule an appointment so that we can help you!

What's the Process for Getting a Crown?

Planning, creating, and placing a dental is typically accomplished with two visits to our Las Vegas dental office.

First Visit: We Prepare Your Tooth

The first step is to alter the shape and size of the tooth to create room for the crown to fit comfortably. Dr. Tsang will numb the area with a strong local anesthetic to ensure you're comfortable and won't feel any pain. Next, we record your tooth shade and take a mess-free digital impression of your mouth.

The virtual impression provides a 3-D model of your tooth that our dental lab partners use to customize your restoration. Before you leave us, Dr. Tsang will place a temporary crown on the tooth to protect it while we wait for your final crown.

Second Visit: We Place Your Final Crown

We will schedule a second appointment for you when we receive the crown back from the lab in about 2–3 weeks.

Dr. Tsang carefully removes the temporary and cleans the tooth. He checks the final crown for quality, then tries it on your tooth to ensure it feels comfortable when you bite down. He then adjusts the restoration as needed, polishes it, and cements it securely onto the tooth.

When you care for your new crown properly with consistent brushing, flossing, and routine teeth cleanings, it can provide 15 years or more of use.

Replace Missing Teeth with a Dental Bridge

Aside from aesthetics, there are several reasons to replace a missing tooth. The gap in your smile allows neighboring teeth to gradually drift and tilt into the space. This movement can lead to bite problems, worn or cracked teeth, tooth misalignment, and TMJ pain.

A dental bridge is a prosthetic that replaces one or two missing teeth in a row. It is designed as three pieces bonded together to form a single unit. It consists of an artificial tooth called a pontic with crowns on either side attached to adjacent teeth for support.

We follow the same steps for designing and placing a dental bridge as those for a dental crown, which takes 2-3 weeks.

Dental Crowns and Bridges Technology

Digital Impressions

Taking dental impressions used to be a messy, uncomfortable process, but not anymore! Instead of the dreaded pink paste you may have had in the past, we use an intraoral scanner.

Getting a digital impression is easy because all you do is sit still while we move the scanner over your teeth. This leading-edge digital imaging technology instantly delivers a 3-D image of your teeth that our dentist views on a computer monitor.

There’s no sitting around with an uncomfortable tray filled with gooey paste stuck in your mouth and no waiting while the material sets. Digital impressions are more comfortable and provide a highly-detailed, accurate representation that is not possible with paste impressions.
